ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the context within which digital musicians are working. It begins by looking at the wider digital culture and then situates the individual within that, encouraging a thoughtful and critical approach to the consequent self-awareness that may bring about. It discusses notions of emergence and how these may influence musical development. It discusses cultural diversity and the consequences of globalization for the digital musical culture. It critically analyzes four selected works of digital music in order to evaluate the transnational consequences of cultural translation. The chapter includes comments on cultural context from the case study musicians. It offers some critical questions as food for thought. It provides three creative projects for practical work in class, and a list of recommended further readings and suggested listening.
