ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the act of listening, considering this first from a physiological and neurological perspective, and then from a more philosophical point of view. It begins with a discussion of the audiological mechanics of hearing and the ways in which these may change over time or be affected by age or disease. It then discusses how the ear connects to the brain and the consequences for human beings. It also considers what is meant by ‘machine listening’ and how this relates to musical practice today. It discusses in depth various concepts of listening, including listening modes and listening situations, and examines formative concepts such as soundscape. It includes comments on hearing and listening from the case study musicians. It offers some critical questions as food for thought. It provides three creative projects for practical work in class, and a list of recommended further readings and suggested listening.
