ABSTRACT

Because failures to complete dissertations are often attributed to mysterious psychological problems termed “writer’s block,” this chapter redefines “writing blocks” as obstacles to movement through the process with varying causes and effects. Reviewing early explanations of blocks as cognitive problems, or misconceptions of writing, we consider further types of blocks caused by performative approaches to writing, underlying conditions such as mood disorders or AD/HD, and circumstantial obstacles to productive writing. The chapter concludes with diagnostic questions writers can use to identify the specific causes of their problems and find solutions.
