ABSTRACT
The activities that we usually consider to require intelligence are those that call for thinking and reasoning — solving problems, proving theorems and playing games such as chess and draughts. The skills underlying these activities were the focus of the earliest AI research, a fact that explains the presence of the word intelligence in the name artificial intelligence.
