ABSTRACT

The evolution of the modern bridge, from around 1850, both coincided with, and influenced the growth of modernist art movements. Many European avant-gardists used the new bridges as subject material for their revolutionary art. That trend continued in New York, as modern art permeated the city, particularly after the celebrated Armory Exhibition of 1913. The bridges of New York were a rich source of inspiration for a plethora of twentieth century artists. This paper discusses some bridges of New York City, both the iconic and unsung, the people who built them, the artists who were inspired by them, and the paintings they produced.
