ABSTRACT

The Freischar came into being in 1926 as the result of a merger between the Neupfadfinder, whose activities were described in some detail in the last chapter, and the Altwandervogel, one of the earlier groups which had survived the great post-war crisis relatively unscathed. Smaller factions from both Germany and Austria joined in, and it looked for a time as though an old and cherished dream might now come true-the united German youth movement. But it did not last, and was revived only in 1933 in a last-minute unsuccessful attempt by the Bunde to forestall dissolution by the Hitler government.
