ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the various careers that are possible with a degree in child and adolescent development. A degree in child and adolescent development is a great foundation for a whole host of careers that involve children and families. The chapter explores careers by examining career paths in early childhood education (ECE). It discusses the job of a preschool/child care center director or manager. The National Association of the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) considers those grades to be in the ECE field. The NAEYC has written standards and guidelines for those grade levels. The chapter discusses some of these standards, such as ethics. Majoring in child and adolescent development can also prepare for a career of teaching in the early elementary grades. Careers in ECE have more depth and variety than most realize. Therefore, starting with a foundation in child and adolescent development is a great beginning to a career in the ECE field.
