ABSTRACT

A key marker in anyone's career is progress up the promotional ladder. This chapter explores the various types of promotions in the industry and the ways different companies and work cultures may approach promotion. It then discusses how individuals can prepare to place themselves in a better position to achieve promotion. The chapter includes some cautionary material about how not every promotion should be welcomed by an employee. For example, an engineer who loves coding may be less happy getting promoted to a supervisory position that involves much less coding as part of the workday.
