ABSTRACT

Even once all the choices about courses and colleges are made and the student has been offered a place in a top program, there are many things students can be doing to give themselves a head start. This chapter discusses some of the activities they need to be doing, or could be doing, as a precursor to heading off to college. Among these are the need to maintain and update portfolios, to continue trying to make games during the summer months, and to develop so-called procedural literacy. Regarding that last item, the authors provide a brief sketch of what procedural literacy entails. The chapter concludes with a brief discussion of balancing positive activities students can engage in by way of preparing for college against the need to take some well-deserved time off after finishing high school.
