ABSTRACT

Students starting college are faced with a succession of major culture shocks as they move from a high school learning environment to a college learning environment. They are also faced with major changes to their social groupings, including the possibility of moving hundreds of miles away from friends and family. This chapter discusses the many new challenges students will face and the pitfalls and potential dangers that this upheaval can bring. These include the risk of engaging in potentially addictive or sabotaging behaviors, and the chapter offers a modicum of advice (given the necessary limits on what can practicably be suggested) on how to be alert to these. More positively, the authors discuss the prospects for developing new friendships, working on game development teams, and developing productive relationships with faculty.
