ABSTRACT

As alluded to in Chapter Six, —Teamwork, Part One, the game industry is relentlessly team-based, with specifically defined roles on any team that need to be filled. The various roles rely on the work of other disciplines to be successful. This chapter provides an extensive discussion of all the main roles specific to game production (e.g., designer, engineer, artist, producer) and how they fit into the team and the production schedule. This is followed by a general overview of the various phases of game development (e.g., first playable, alpha, beta) and who is involved at what stages. Taken together, these discussions about roles on the team and phases in the development process provide a capsule overview of how game development, in broad terms, is conducted.
