ABSTRACT
The first half of the following enquiry into Varieties of musical experience is going to deal only with the people I have called “Listeners “ because it is only after becoming acquainted with their comparatively simple and uniform character that we can do justice to the far more various, more complicated and in many ways more interesting musical experience of those whom it is convenient to consider as mere “Hearers.”
