ABSTRACT

In large metropolitan areas as well as peripheral regions in the outskirts of Europe, traveling expertise ties local policy-makers together with private consultants, academic experts, and discourses of innovation, entrepreneurship, and creativity in a perpetual struggle to boost regional competitiveness. Thinking assemblages help us set the perimeters for the study at hand by providing a way of writing about abstractions such as traveling expertise or, for that matter, regional development. By paying attention to how governing is understood to be nested in problematizations, how these, in turn, are connected to certain political rationalities and governmental technologies, how these help produce subjects and objects, the chapter illustrates how traveling expertise is reproduced within regional development. It focuses on large datasets generated as part of multiple five year research projects directed towards broad questions such as the issues of citizenship and globalization in contemporary regional development. The chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
