ABSTRACT
In his study of The Metaphysical Nooel in England and America, 1 Edwin M. Eigner expresses his belief that the plot and meaning of Martin Chuzzlewit were preconceived by Dickens, and that the novel has a centre. But, even if there is a preconceived centre in the plot and in the meaning of Martin Chuzzlewit, that novel contains much else besides.
