Digression on Creeds

Many people, if asked whether there are any permanent beliefs in religion, would reply, “Yes, altogether too many, and too permanently! Look at the creeds.” Therefore it will be advisable, before continuing with our analysis along the lines of the last chapter, to take time out to look carefully at creeds-and related mattersboth to see whether they deserve the harsh treatment they so often receive, and to lay a foundation for a more complete study of the permanence and transience of religious thought.
