A Negative Approach

In the preceding chapter the approach was positive in the attempt to characterize science and religion by pointing out some of their most distinctive fundamental features. Now the approach will be negative in the sense that certain commonly held notions will be examined that seem to me to be erroneous stereotypes that do not correspond to the actualities of science and religion. The discussion will focus in the main upon two such stereotypes, namely “ the scientific method” and “divine revelation.”
