ABSTRACT
RENEWED interest in the problem of induction has developed during this century as a result of progress in the theory of probability; great expectations have been aroused that the problem could be solved by this theory. After all, if inductive conclusions are no longer required to be certain, may we not hope to prove them probable? Whether or not this approach leads up a blind alley remains to be seen.
