ABSTRACT
We have already seen that the confession of faith, the shahāda, has a personal form: “I witness that there is no God but Allah, and I witness that Muhammad is the Apostle of Allah”. This personal form is in accordance with the fact that the shahāda did not arise out of the needs of the Muslim community, but was designed as the religious summary of Islam which was to be used by individuals.
