The European lands on the Coast of Africa, as a Man of Science, or a Man of Commerce, or a great Hunter, or a mighty Explorer, totally regardless of the rights of others ... he treats the tribes, who have had the prescriptive possession of the country for centuries, as if they were in the category of the wild beasts, mere 'ferae naturae': he cares neither for their souls, nor their bodies.
