In working out a chronology of the Pa!i Canon, we find helpful landmarks in the early history of Buddhism in the traditional councils that were convened by the Indian Buddhists. Unfortunately for the serious student of Buddha-dhamma, these councils have been the objects of legendary speculation: the origin of many of these misunderstandings can be traced to the medieval Sinhalese chronicles (yafTlsas), and this is a question which we shall touch upon later.
