ABSTRACT

S-PLUS is a graphical data analysis and mathematical computing system and an object-oriented programming language developed by MathSoft, Inc., StatSci Division. It is an enhanced superset of the S language developed at AT&T Bell Laboratories by Richard Becker, John Chambers, and Allan Wilks, described in The New S Language (Becker et al., 1988), and is the result of over 16 years of research and development at Bell Labs, plus over 7 years of development at Statistical Sciences (now MathSoft, StatSci division). S-PLUS is a general toolbox of methods for statisticians, applied mathematicians, and scientific researchers.S-PLUS emphasizes

dynamic, interactive, and presentation graphics,

exploratory data-analytic methods,

statistical methods,

mathematical computations, and

extensibility through programming and interfaces to other languages.
