ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces and develops a creative theological conversation between the themes and patterns of the Christian mystical tradition, as set out in Section One of this book, and the lives of the eight gay men who were interviewed, as discussed in Section Two. First, their early spiritual and sexual awakenings are explored, then the emerging clash between these energies is discussed, with particular attention to the ways this unfolded for each man. Second, the mystical phase of purgation, or the Purgative Way, is examined and reframed in the light of the lived experience of these men as they dealt with their sexual struggles, personal uncertainties, and spiritual challenges. Third, their young adult awakenings and their varying paths towards coming out as gay are considered, with particular reference to the gradual emergence for each man of the conscious possibility of integrating sexuality and spirituality.
