ABSTRACT

Wood is a biologically renewable substance and one of the most fascinating materials due to its very complex structure and its wide, extensive uses. The Concise Encyclopedia of Wood and Wood-Based Materials defines wood as “the hard, fibrous tissue that comprises the major part of stems, branches and roots of trees, belonging to the plant groups known as the gymnosperms and the dicotyledonous angiosperms.” Wood can be considered to be a biological composite that is produced by the living organisms of trees. Its organization can be observed on discrete scale levels, ranging from the molecular to the macroscopic.
