Descriptions and Quantifications of Univariate Samples: Numerical Summaries

In Chapters 6 and 7 we consider samples of independent univariate random variables whose distribution we wish to characterize, either by numerical summaries or by graphical displays. The emphasis in this chapter is on numerical summaries, which before the advent of cheap and widely available computer graphics, were the primary means of looking at data distributions.
