ABSTRACT

The Enhanced Partial Beta Factor (PBF) method for quantifying dependent failures uses a checklist to guide the assessor through all the potential defences and provides a systematic and fully auditable approach to the quantification of dependent failures. It therefore reduces the degree of expert opinion required for a dependent failures assessment by breaking down the judgement of the effectiveness of defences against dependent failures into their component parts. The method is described and an example of its application by considering a simple standby diesel alternator system.
