ABSTRACT
A strategy is described that will ensure that the treatment of Human Factors in plant design and assessment is both effective and efficient. The strategy provides guidance on the depth of Human Factors analysis that is appropriate according to the conseauences of operator error. In the strategy, plant is graded into one of four categories according to the potential hazards that are involved in its operation and the potential for operator induced accidents. Each category of plant has a different programme of Human Factors analysis, consisting of different techniaues and different levels of detail. These techniaues are described and the content of the different programmes is provided.
