ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the revised regulations consists of the synthetic organic pesticides, the broad spectrum of inorganic chemicals and the biological contaminants. It is concerned with pesticides that are migrating to water supplies, and pesticides that are used as part of the control of waterborne pests in the watersheds. Drinking water is uniquely the most significant source of those substances that are associated intimately with drinking water production, especially disinfection and other treatment processes. The organics are primarily pesticides and other synthetic organic chemicals, often just discovered in the last years as potential contaminants in groundwater. There are cases where one would find considerably higher concentrations, but in general, at these levels exposures from sources other than drinking water usually are by far much more significant in terms of daily body burden. The chapter provides an idea of some of the compliance results in the United States since the implementation of the Safe Drinking Water Act interim regulations.
