ABSTRACT

In the United States, bottled water is an alternative option to municipal drinking water. This is because U.S. bottled water either is groundwater which is disinfected by ozone (not chlorine) as it is bottled, or is municipal tap water which has been treated with granular activated carbon (to remove chlorine and other dissolved organics), and with deionizing resins (to remove inorganics). Specific levels of minerals then are added, and the water is ozonized as it is bottled. As a result, U.S. bottled waters do not contain the chlorinous tastes and odors sometimes prevalent in U.S. municipal tap waters.
