ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the evolving role of the information technology (IT) organization in an environment that is constantly changing and being defined by the realities of reengineering. The reality is that what has been written and said about reengineering is accurate — and the message conveyed is an absolute necessity. As IT has expanded its audience and its capabilities, it has allowed for an entirely new vision for business operations. IT enables the types of changes necessary for business growth and maintenance in the near and long term. The IT staff must be empowered to allow them the flexibility and motivation to carry out the type of changes necessary. Without empowered staff, reengineering does not work. Staff must be empowered to achieve a rapid development goal and make decisions that can help users without having to refer to any committees.
