ABSTRACT

International communication has seen an immense expansion from its early conceptualization within the structure of international relations into an ever-growing field that stems from the rapid globalization of international processes. This reflects the renewed interest in the global dimension of communication through an interdisciplinary fermentation from the social sciences and humanities. Conceptualizing international communication as a subfield of communication and media studies, rather than defining it within a particular disciplinary or paradigmatic perspective, this chapter provides a comprehensive overview of paradigms, theories, and approaches that have dominated the study of international communication during the 20th and 21st centuries.
