ABSTRACT

This part introduction presents some of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters. The part presents the preparation and examination of direct wet mounts. There are a number of complementary methods performed on the preserved fecal specimen that enhance the individual's ability to find and identify parasites and eggs by microscopic examination. These include, but are not limited to, methods for concentrating eggs and juveniles (larvae) of helminths, and trophozoites and cysts of protozoa, and methods for preparing permanently stained fecal films of protozoa. The part discusses how the methods are grouped to form systems, and the effectiveness and efficiency of the different systems. It also presents special methods, such as acid-fast staining, preparation of temporary wet mounts, egg counts, and after-treatment examination.
