ABSTRACT

Control of seedborne pathogens and diseases is attained through integrated disease-management systems. This chapter discusses the methods which directly assist in prevention of seed infection in the field or control of seedborne infection and infestation. Proper crop management can help in the production of relatively pathogen-free seeds. Seed treatment is a biological, chemical, mechanical, or physical process designed to mitigate externally or internally seed- or soilborne microorganisms, resulting in the emergence of a healthy seedling and subsequently a healthy plant. Certification ensures that seed lots meet certain quality standards and that the history of each lot is traceable. It involves testing seeds before sowing and after harvest; and crop inspection for compliance with standards, including isolation and freedom from weed seeds and diseases. The importance of plant quarantines has increased because of the increase in exchange of seeds or grains for consumption along with better means of transportation.
