ABSTRACT

This chapter describes research on the correlates of emotional schemas and different forms of psychopathology and functioning. Research by different teams worldwide provides support for the model. Emotional schemas are related to depression, anxiety, metacognitive factors of worry, dispositional mindfulness, bipolar disorder, psychological flexibility and risk aversion. In addition, emotional schemas mediate the relationship between early childhood experience and later borderline personality. Outcome research also supports the model. Emotional schema therapy has been shown to be effective with generalized anxiety, social anxiety and depression and reduces the likelihood of anti-social behaviour in youth. EST also increases the use of adaptive emotion regulation strategies in women who have suffered abuse.
