ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the British Association of Play Therapists (BAPT) ethical framework. It addresses ethical principles, personal qualities and skill competences. The chapter highlights the importance, use and application of the BAPT ethical framework through the use of brief vignettes and a case study. It deals with a discussion on preparing for play therapy and the legal framework which governs practice and delivery of interventions. Play therapy is a therapeutic intervention which seeks to promote emotional well-being for children experiencing emotional and behavioural difficulties. The presentation of varying needs within this population group requires play therapists to work and engage with differing levels of vulnerability, which necessitates sensitivity, protection and safeguarding. A clear ethical framework demystifies play therapy practice and promotes high calibre professional conduct by laying down principles which can be used to hold the therapist to account and to keep all parties safe.
