ABSTRACT

Cotton has been grown for several thousands of years as a source of fiber that is used as a textile material. However, for every 100 kg of cotton fiber produced, the cotton plant also yields approximately 160 kg of cottonseed. With processing, typical yields from cottonseed are 50% meal, 22% hulls, 16% oil, 7% linters, with a 5% loss. Although much of the meal is utilized in ruminant diets, the price relationship between cottonseed meal and other high-protein feedstuffs often provides an excellent opportunity for pork producers to use cottonseed meal in order to reduce feed costs.
