ABSTRACT

Although soybean meal is the major protein supplement used in swine rations throughout the world, meal from locally grown plants can often replace all or part of the soybean meal in the diet. These alternate plant proteins can be used to improve the overall quality of dietary protein or to reduce the costs associated with feeding high priced protein supplements. Safflower (false or bastard saffron, dyer’s saffron, kardiseed, kusum, suff) is a warmtemperature plant which is cultivated throughout tropical climates for its oil. Safflower seed meal, a by-product of the oil seed crushing industry, may have potential as an alternate source of protein for use in swine rations.
