ABSTRACT
The assimilationist approach adopted was thus characterized by a response that featured the educational needs of, and the language provision for, immigrant children to be accompanied by a policy of dispersal. The underlying assumption was that immigrant children must adapt to British society. There was no acknowledgement of the im portance for these children to retain their cultural and religious life styles.
