ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the steps that need to be taken before defining and estimating a Land use and Transport Interaction Model (LUTI). It also presents a case study centred on the urban area of Santander. The input data can be deduced from the general requirements of the LUTI model used in the Santander case study. The study areas that are normally simulated by LUTI models are differently scaled urban zones ranging from small- and medium-sized cities to large regional urban areas. A LUTI model was proposed as the best option to simulate how changes made to the transport system would affect the rest of the urban system. LUTI models are the tools available for the evaluation of urban policies and planning, but under no circumstances should they be seen as providing a definitive final answer to the questions being asked.
