ABSTRACT

This chapter covers the devices oxymoron, pun, and anthimeria. An oxymoron is an apparent contradiction that nevertheless makes sense. A pun is a play on words, with one word suggesting more than one meaning or suggesting another word. Anthimeria is the use of one part of speech as if it were another, such as using a noun as a verb. Style Check 16 discusses the future of writing styles. Define Your Terms asks students to define each of the rhetorical devices discussed in the chapter and to provide their own examples of each one. It’s in the Cloud asks students to research the calculated reading grade level that text analysis software provides. Salt and Pepper 16 challenges students to locate as many rhetorical devices used by the author of the book itself.
