ABSTRACT

This chapter covers three rhetorical devices useful for making logical transition writing: Metabasis, procatalepsis, and hypophora. Metabasis consists of a brief statement of what has been said and a brief statement of what will follow. Procatalepsis anticipates an objection and responds to it. Hypophora asks one or more questions and answers them often at some length. Style check for discusses transitions of logic and presents an organized table for student use. Define Your Terms asks students to define the rhetorical devices covered in the chapter. It’s in the Cloud asks students to do some research about writing analysis apps and write up a report about that. Salt and Pepper discusses the use of a pari and a fortiori arguments. The chapter ends with a Review Questions quiz and Questions for Thought and Discussion, asking students to think personally about rhetoric and their writing lives ahead.
