ABSTRACT

This chapter covers six of the various rhetorical devices involving syntax or sentence structure. Zeugma is a somewhat general term, involving linking together two or more words by another word. Using two subjects with one verb would be an example. Diazeugma involves one subject linked to multiple verbs. With prozeugma, the linking word is presented at the beginning of the sentence and omitted in subsequent clauses. In mesozeugma, the linking word comes in the middle of the sentence. In hypozeugma, the linking word follows the words it links together. Syllepsis involves linking terms together in different senses. Style Check 6 discusses cumulative and periodic sentences that help a writer control the reader’s attention by appropriately using them. Define Your Terms asks students to define each of the rhetorical devices discussed in the chapter and to provide their own examples of each one. It’s in the Cloud asks students to research an article about the rhetoric of advertising. Salt and Pepper 6 asks students to analyze a short piece about a banquet. The chapter ends with a Review Questions quiz and Questions for Thought and Discussion, asking students to think about some of the ideas discussed in the chapter.
