ABSTRACT

This chapter covers four more devices related to syntactical arrangements: hyperbaton, anastrophe, appositive, and parenthesis. Hyperbaton refers to any syntactical structure out of the ordinary. Anastrophe involves the reversal or transposition of words. An appositive is a noun that redescribes another noun. Parenthesis is a comment inserted into the middle of a sentence. Style Check 7 discusses parataxis and hypotaxis, the use of subordinating conjunctions to differentiate between more important ideas and the ideas that support them. Define Your Terms asks students to define each of the rhetorical devices discussed in the chapter and to provide their own examples of each one. It’s in the Cloud asks students to add to the list of subordinating conjunctions in the book, so they will have a robust list to use in their writing. Salt and Pepper 7 asks students to analyze from a rhetorical standpoint a short piece about cooking rice. The chapter ends with a Review Questions quiz and Questions for Thought and Discussion, asking students to think about some of the ideas discussed in the chapter.
