ABSTRACT

The production of farm-raised Atlantic salmon is a relatively new industry, which was rather limited until the early 1970s. The farming of this species has since escalated to a world production in 1989 of over 177,000 tons, 1 of which Norway produced 65%. Other major producing countries are United Kingdom (18%), Faeroe Islands (5%), Ireland (4%), Chile (3%), Iceland (2%), United States (2%), and Canada (2%). The world production of farm-raised Atlantic salmon is approximately 4.5 times that of Pacific salmon. 1
