ABSTRACT
A brief account of the historical development of applied algology is given, providing references to basic algological literature. A shorter section on seaweeds and seaweed farming is followed by a more detailed description of the onset of microalgal uses for nutritional purposes, sanitary engineering schemes, production of chemicals, and energy farming.
