ABSTRACT

This collection considers how scholars have engaged with belonging as a discursive and complex process, a personal and powerful dialectic in constant negotiation with one’s surroundings. The research presented compels us to conceptualise belonging as personal, infused with individuals and collective histories, interwoven with conceptions of place and the youth experiences with their social milieu. We contend that the collection is positioned at an important time in studies of youth. As young people experience their transition into adulthood with increased precarity, it is time we take theories of belonging seriously. These theories can open up new spaces and provide critical insights.
