ABSTRACT

For any child, irrespective of an autism diagnosis, inappropriate behaviours can occur, but all behaviours are present for a reason. To gain a predictable response from another person. If another child or adult has a particular reaction, and the child with autism gains pleasure from this, then the behaviour is likely to be repeated, in order for them to have that same reaction each time. If the behaviour is due to frustration at not being understood, then giving suggestions as to what could be upsetting them, or asking their peers if they have witnessed anything that has upset them, might shed some light on their frustrations. If the behaviour is due to the child with autism feeling upset because of another child's actions, then it is important to speak with both parties to figure out what has gone wrong.
