ABSTRACT

Going on a trip or educational visit, is an occasion that most children will anticipate with eager enthusiasm. Having planned the venue and the transport, it is now time to talk about the proposed trip with the child with autism. Trips that involve the child living in a different environment that they are used to for any period of time, require very careful thought and planning, and can be problematic for children with autism. Using a calendar, one displaying the whole year on one page, is a good way to denote the time passing until the trip, without 'flipping' on to the next month. Travelling for long distances can be difficult for a child with autism, so keeping them occupied is important. It's not only important to give preparation for the trip beginning, it is also important to give plenty of notice of when the trip is coming to an end.
