ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how data center managers alone or with EDP auditors can eliminate processing inefficiencies by targeting potential weak spots and initiating corrective measures. The data center manager should evaluate system work load levels and the impact of development activities on overall system performance. The processing work load of an MVS data center consists of batch, online, and TSO processes. The data center manager should determine whether the consultant's experience is current and includes the operating system used in the organization. The consultant should have hands-on experience with performance measurement software and be familiar with online data monitoring. Before evaluating systems performance, the data center manager must determine the level of processing service required by the organization within its resource and cost constraints. The primary tools for measuring performance of an MVS system are its IBM system monitors, the system management facility, and the resource measurement facility.
