ABSTRACT

Business continuity plans address the evolving integrated and networked business environments. This chapter presents some of the lessons learned, including some of the tools, techniques, and strategies that have proved effective. Numerous planning tools and strategies are available to help companies develop plans. The tools include commercially available software, consulting services, and several public-domain information sources. Effective business resumption planning requires that midrange systems be evaluated with the same thoroughness used with mainframes. Formal recovery planning and testing is an essential part of the total recovery solution. The goal of work group recovery planning is to re-establish essential day-to-day business functions before the consequential effects occur. The ultimate solution for desktop and local area network information recovery rests in two major areas: standards and standards enforcement. The two most common hardware recovery alternatives for individual workstations are replacement at the time of the disaster and having shippable microcomputers.
