ABSTRACT

The career planning and job requirement charts can be used to unify departmental planning efforts, design flexibility into promotion paths, and keep data center employees aware of their career choices. Career development discussions and objectives should be linked directly to the business needs of the organization, performance evaluations, staffing, individual development planning, and succession planning. When a preliminary set of career paths, job families, and task structures has been developed, a task force including business and systems managers should review the documents for completeness, clarity, and consistency to eliminate overlap or gaps in job content. The career path structure identifies the hierarchy of jobs, or job family, through which a proficient individual can proceed. The integration of career path structures with individual career plans allows an organization to tailor employee opportunities for training, broadened on-the-job experience, and internal transfer to meet the needs of the organization and its employees.
